Chapter Twelve

The Dagda’s palace often brimmed with gods and goddesses of his pantheon entering and leaving, dining in the great hall, and laughing and joking with one another in one of the many libraries or dens. The Tuatha Dé and their Greek and Egyptian friends could often be found in the vast pastures behind his palace where the red-eared cattle still grazed after the last raid, although Macha and Nemain often eyed Thoth and Osiris with friendly suspicion since it was their turn to win back the cattle of the Otherworld.

As Selena ran her fingers over her tapestry in the hall, which danced beneath her touch, she looked around the palace, the silence only slightly alarming her. More than anything, she was just curious as to why everyone in her family had decided to take a nap at the same time. Why else would a huge palace be so quiet?

Cameron kept his eyes fixed on the door where Badb was supposed to return with Morgan. The Dagda ran his fingers through his beard and shook his head slowly. “How long did that meal take? Did everyone die on us?”

Cameron snickered and patted his shoulder. “The Curse of Loki. He somehow figured out how to reverse time between the Otherworld and Earth.”

Selena let her fingers fall from the tapestry and put her head on Cameron’s shoulder. She stifled a yawn and told them, “Maybe the Egyptians have attempted their cattle raid and everyone went outside to watch it.”

The door opened and Badb entered the hall alone. She put a hand on her hip and exhaled heavily. “I can’t find anyone!”

“You threatened to tell them about your sex life, didn’t you?” Cameron asked.

Badb narrowed her eyes at him and said, “Just for that, I’m telling you why I prefer Irish lads.”

“Selena, deal breaker,” Cameron warned.

Selena nodded and stifled another yawn. “Snakes, spiders, cornfields, listening to details about Badb’s sex life… I think it would be easier for you to make a list of things that aren’t deal breakers for us.”

The door opened again and Aonghus entered, letting his eyes quickly glide over each person in the room, but just as before, they settled on Cameron even though he addressed Badb. “Where did you both go? We’ve been to every island looking for you.”

“What’s happened?” the Dagda asked, the normal joviality gone from his voice.

“We can’t find her,” Aonghus answered.

“Oh, God,” Badb breathed.

Aonghus nodded but his gaze remained fixed on Cameron. “When I got back to the palace, she was already acting strangely. She kept asking everyone where Cameron and Selena were and when someone finally told her you were gone, she flipped out. Nobody’s been able to find her since.”

“No,” Badb groaned. She turned to Selena and put her hands on the demigoddess’s shoulders. “This is my fault! I gave her the Sword! I’ve spent centuries planning how to help you and I’ve already screwed it up!”

Aonghus finally looked away from Cameron so he could glare at Badb. “I told you it was a terrible mistake to give her the Sword.
